WHO WE ARE
Just Peace for Israel/Palestine (JPIP) is a group of people committed to supporting a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian situation which so sorely torments the international community generally and the peoples of the region in particular. This requires a respectful hearing of both parties’ just claims. The just claims for Israel’s security are fully heard and supported by our government, and we join with the majority of Americans who support Israel’s claim to secure existence.
We are as well united by our concern for the just claims of the Palestinians, which are not yet widely recognized nor discussed in our country. Many in our group have had direct experience with on-the-ground realities in Israel/Palestine, some over decades and during extended sojourns. All of us are on a continuing journey to inform ourselves about the claims of each side. JPIP meets in Black Mountain and Asheville each month and our public programs provide opportunities to share what we learn.
Through film series, book discussions, forums, street protests and lectures, we educate ourselves and inform others about the history of Palestine and Israel and the current difficulties in finding a just peace.
We have sponsored talks by authors such as Don Wagner, renowned historian of Christian Zionism, and Miko Peled, whose memoir, The General’s Son, recounts his family’s, and eventually his, experiences as Israeli peacemakers.
We have brought speakers to campuses, churches, mosques, and civic groups, and held luncheon seminars for clergy. We have helped fund a college student’s participation in a summer workcamp in Jerusalem through the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and an artist’s travels to document in watercolor her observations of life in the Occupied Territories.
We have joined the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS - see menu) and hold vigils about products manufactured in occupied Palestine, such as SodaStream, a home carbonation device sold locally. We have chosen not to boycott products made in Israel. During these vigils we have also called for an end to the occupation of The West Bank and Gaza. These and other educational initiatives are funded by dues, contributions, and our sale of Jerusalem Blend coffee.
Stay tuned for events focusing on the condition of children in the Occupied Territories and free speech issues related to BDS.
